About the St. Andrews Society
The St. Andrews Society is a worldwide organization named in honor of Scotland's patron saint. It is known to be the oldest charitable organization in continuous existence in North America. The society was first organized in the 1700's by prominent gentlemen of Scottish ancestry to assist large numbers of destitute Scots arriving in America. Membership to this exclusive society was originally only for males of Scottish descent. Five of its original members were signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Today, the St. Andrews Society still holds many of the same functions. The St. Andrews Society promotes scholarship to learn more about highland dancing , bagpiping and drumming and assists those studying in attending workshops and competitions through out the U.S. and abroad. Membership is now open to both males and females and welcomes all people of Celtic heritage or those interested in learning more about Celtic culture.
